Monday 15th March sees the release of 'Tons Of Friends' - the much anticipated studio album from Phra and Bot, the Italian beatmongers aka Crookers. After remixing such huge names in pop and rock along with the chart success of their Kid Cudi's Day 'n' Night remix earlier in 2009, the hip house pioneers have now gone direct to some of their favourite artists to work alongside on their 20 track debut album. Aptly titled 'Tons of Friends', the roll call of pals involved is jaw dropping. It is a genre-busting mismatch of dance floor heavyweights including Kelis, Soulwax, Will.I.Am, Yelle, Rye Rye, Pitbull, Miike Snow and Roisin Murphy to name a few. The result is an eclectic cross-pollination between the club and "The Club" where a mahoosive slab of hip house is served up alongside distinctive dancehall style rap and ultra cool synth pop drama.

DJ Mehdi & Riton Are... Carte Blanche ! The Carte Blanche EP will be released in May on Ed Banger Records. "You Gonna Love The House". This is what DJ Mehdi told Riton when he invited him for a tour of the Chicago ghetto music he's been stashing for 3 years, waiting for the best moment to reveal it in all its glory. And this is exactly what happened : British grand master DJ and producer Riton moved in, and never wanted to leave. He loved the House, they both loved the House. They got married and lived very happily during the years 2009 and 10. Their brainchild was born, and everybody welcomed Carte Blanche into the world. Of course, they weren't the only ones. Ed Banger honcho Busy P snatched the mp3s that were bouncing back and forth across the Chunnel for a forthcoming release on the label. The result ? Four tracks of neck-breaking breaks, a shout-out to the masters, but with no nostalgia whatsoever. And, ok, maybe a couple of (obvious) samples. DJ Mehdi and Riton will tour as Carte Blanche in May and June 2010, visiting all major cities in Europe and North-America. Four decks, one mixer, and a TR 909, of course. No bangers, strictly house music. Their first EP is set to drop on Ed Banger in May 2010.

Roska "Elevated Levels"

Over the last two years the productions of Roska, aka Wayne Goodlitt, have helped define the rhythmic make-up of UK dance music in the early 21st century. His ruggedly syncopated riddims on the Roska Kicks & Snares imprint and a slew of prominent remixes for artists from Martyn to Ghosts On Tape have ensured his ubiquity in underground circles and an increasing profile further afield with DJs like Kode 9, Cooly G and Bok Bok spinning his tracks worldwide. The tracks in this selection span his two alter egos, from the tuff house programming of his Roska beats to the more percussive and Afro-tribal influences of the Uncle Bakongo project, all shot-through with a healthy balance of frothy soca house melody and a muscular rhythmic weight. Watch any of these tunes drop in a dance and you know you're in the presence of some seriously affective vibes. As the dubstep rave continues to homogenize into curdled formulaity, it's the bare-bones approach and rooted principles of producers like Roska which are fuelling some of the most exciting developments in UK dance music right now.

Breakage "Old Skool Ting"

One of 2010s most anticipated Dubstep/D'n'B albums lands on Digital Soundboy, featuring an all-star UK urban dance cast of Burial, Rodigan, Roots Manuva, Newham Gens and Donae'o. Just in case all that government-disapproved megaweed has addled your mind, we shouldn't forget that his debut 'This Too Shall Pass' was a landmark LP for the D'n'B fraternity. As a follow-up 'Foundation' certainly builds on a few of its themes, while also incorporating his new dubstep style to effortlessly alternate between the two tempo regions. Blatantly, the Burial link-up on 'Vial' is one of the biggest attractions. Thankfully, it's also worth the investment too, finding solid ground between Burial's quicksilver slink and Breakage's tuff bass-sculpting. The established anthem 'Hard' featuring Newham Generals and Rodigan's inimitable mic chat is another major highlight, shaping his sound with a grimier intention, while the uptempo junglist tracks are superbly executed. 'Old Skool Ting' runs on some potent Congo Natty juice and Kemo's appearance on 'Temper' imagines Tricky working with Krust on some darkside Bristolian ting. With Breakage's sound it's all about the lushness of his execution, making bass that exudes comfort and chills in equal measures, while his percussive programming is still the envy of many in the scene...

Hometown : Manchester.
The lineup : Theo Hutchcraft (vocals), Adam Anderson (electronics, guitar).
The background : Once upon a time, it was the law that all indie bands had to be moody and European, arty and pretentious. Then along came Oasis and the Thick Rock Lad took over. Still, thanks to today's new band, we can be reminded of a period when it was OK to namedrop obscure literary texts in interviews and resemble gaunt, starving artistes masquerading as stylish Italian models or actors in pseudo-y French existentialist movies from the 60s. The video to Hurt's debut single, Wonderful Life, is so gloriously sombre and monochrome, it's almost obscene, although frankly, up here, we could weep with joy. The angular haircuts, the savage cheekbones, the darkly lit black-and-white setting, the pained stares into the middle distance ... it reeks of eau d'1983 – the year when half-remembered bands with names like the Lotus Eaters, It's Immaterial and Pale Fountains took the shaved-sideboards-and-suits look of post-punk into the mainstream. The song itself is surgingly sad synth-pop, with a mysterious lyric whose optimistic chorus ("Never give up, it's such a wonderful life") contrasts with the dour verses, filled with references to crying and rain. It's even got a Spandau-style sax solo while the video features a gorgeous Edie Sedgwick-alike who appears to be dancing to a completely different song.

Following two massive collaborations with Riton, 'Who's There?' and 'Radiates', and the underground smash hit bootlegs album Mess Detective, Joe Flory aka Primary 1 is back and he's got 'The Blues'. Taking from his forthcoming debut album proper, out in the Autumn on Atlantic Records, 'The Blues' features the crystalline vocals of Nina Persson (The Cardigans and A Camp.) 'The Blues' will shortly be released on super-limited vinyl. Keep your eyes peeled for a stunning video and much much more from Primary 1.

BangGang12s started off with it's first release from Dangerous in 2006 (remember that cover of Around The World) and it only took 29 records for him to do another. either he is geniously lazy or geniously sporadic or geniously lucky, whatever it is here is BG30 from Dan, look forward to BG60 from Dangerous. And now a few words from the man himself about this record...Riton has been caning it and had the courtesy to give you an example of what its sounds like “Live” playing it at a festival in Amsterdam, you get to see what its sounds like when 12,000 Dutch try to groan in key. Weird.

Audio Bullys return with a new album on 29th March. Higher Than The Eiffel follows a four year gap since the pair’s second album, Generation and sees Simon Franks and Tom Dinsdale recapture the energy and dancefloor instincts that made Audio Bullys one of the most successful UK dance acts of the previous decade. Mixing their love of house and breaks with an expansive cast list of musical collaborators, switching across dance’s myriad genres and throwing away the rule book has led Audio Bullys to make their finest record to date, a worthy successor to breakthrough debut Ego War and follow up Generation, which spawned the massive worldwide hit, Shot You Down. Recorded and produced by the band with help from a cast of friends including Suggs and Mike Barson of Madness, Charlie Creed Miles and Si’s brother Jimmy, Higher Than The Eiffel is released on the band’s own Face Piece imprint via Cooking Vinyl on 29th March 2010. The first single Only Man is a throbbing piece of electro disco, with a propulsive hook line that can’t help but put you on the dancefloor. With remixes from Jakwob, whose Ellie Goulding mix got all the right people hot under the collar last year, Radio One Dj, Mixmag blogger and all round DJ hero Dave Spoon and hot new Italians on the block Reset, the international cast deliver varied takes on the original, swerving from Jakwob’s trademark dubstep squelches through Dave Spoon’s electro house to Reset’s funky bassline and bad-ass beats banger.

Gildas & Masaya "Tokyo"

In a few short years Kitsuné, the Franco-Japanese company that’s breaking all the rules, has firmly established itself as a force to reckon with. Cleverly bridging music, fashion and design, this young and unique brand is the brainchild of Gildas Loaec & Masaya Kuroki who foresaw the possibility of creating a structure that would combine all the things they loved. Not content with merely directing the operations Loaec is also a fine dj – an activity that’s proven essential to run what is arguably the most exciting record label in the world today. But why is Kitsuné the record label so vital today ? For many it’ll be because Kitsuné’s not about one genre or style, it’s about all of them, the sky’s the limit… Great music. Full stop. Check their famous ‘Maison’ series that regularly gathers the planet’s hottest new talents. The same applies to Gildas’ deejaying. Why in 2010 would you limit yourself to one sound when there’s much diversity around to play with ? Whereas many A&Rs sit in their office deciding what the public will be into next year, the busy Frenchman never loses touch with the reality of the dancefloor, constantly road-testing new tracks and demos wherever he is spinning. Remember this is one record label that aims to break ground, having! pretty much introduced to the world Digitalism, Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco, Hot Chip and helped launch the carreers of La Roux, Gossip, Boys Noize, Delphic and more recently Two Door Cinema Club… one could claim it has hit its target. Indeed more and more musicians can thank Kitsuné for having taken a risk on them at a time when hardly anyone was paying attention… a fact that certainly makes Kitsuné proud.

Musicians such as Vitalic are few and far between. In a time when words such as “pioneer” and “innovator” get bandied around far too easily, Vitalic – otherwise known as Pascal Arbez-Nicolas – like his Gallic peers Daft Punk, is a small among a small number of artists that warrant such epithets. Last year Vitalic confirmed his status as the Wagner of disco with ‘Flashmob’ his second and finest longplayer to date, an album with a blistering, claustrophobically compressed production, beautifully brutal beats and madly addictive tunes, emotion, invention and melody, all delivered with a wink of its glittery disco eye. For his latest single, the emphatic ‘Second LivesVitalic delivers a breathtaking romp that hurtles into space! Both beguiling and disorienting, ‘Second Lives’ combines the high energy of Vitalic classics LA Rock and Poney Part 1 with the sophisticated production techniques of Vitalic Version 2.0. In short, ‘Second Lives’ has everything you’d expect from the flying V : it’ll make you smile, shake your shit, and still walk away shaken by the music's intensity. For the very first time, Vitalic’s single comes with a remix package ! Bloody Beetroots and newcomer Colonel Up and Mister Down both did a furious banging nu-electro remix whereas Mustang takes us back to the golden age of Studio 54. Lifelike put his magic touch to craft a melodic neo romantic remix.

Bonjour Afrique

No tropical vibe in Bonjour Afrique's music but it sure can turn the heat up... After being remixed by The Toxic Avenger, the duo appeared on several blogs and in Les Inrocks praised by the well know french music journalist JD Beauvallet. Both guys come from hardcore and have played with loads of bands. For their first show ever they were sharing the bill with Todd P's band Big A Little A. Since that, they played in London with Dat Politics. Be sure you will soon hear a lot about Bonjour Afrique and their unique sound of beautiful and bizarre vocal work, crashing drums and frantic guitars...

Brodinski My Jerk Mixtape

Dirty South Joe & Flufftronix - Luvstep (Mixtape Valentine Day)

Kill The Ego / Georges Pompidou

Robyn feat. Diplo "No Hassle"

Following her recent collabs with I Blame Coco and Staygold, we considered ourselves properly teased for some spanking new Robyn material. Fueling that fire was the video clip (posted below) that surfaced in the fall featuring the Swede singer cutting a new track in the studio with U.S. DJ/producer Diplo. Now “No Hassle” the reggae jam the pair were working on, has popped up. Head below the jump to hear it in full, and to watch Robyn and Diplo making pop magic. And here’s Robyn “running this thing like a dancehall queen” with “No Hassle” : It’s a bit more subtle than most of the tunes off Robyn’s last set, and it’s hard to imagine this song being worked as a single. Still, subtlety is a rarity these days, and “No Hassle” definitely has an infectious hook going for it. Robyn is also said to be working on her upcoming LP with Klas Ahlund, who wrote and produced “Handle Me” and “Be Mine!” for her last album.

Shy Child "Liquid Love (Album)"

'Liquid Love', the New Yorkers' Nate Smith and Pete Cafarella's, aka Shy Child's, fourth studio album, is enjoyable at first listen. But it lacks the raw passion of their previous efforts. It sounds, in fact, like the band have found a formula that's un-offensive and have just stuck with it. The '80s seem to have become popular again, which is weird seeing as most people who lived through the decade did so in a haze of badly-dressed depression. But the renovated version of the '80s that we are being fed in various paradigms (by high street fashion stores and alternative radio stations) is strangely attractive - obviously so to Shy Child. Despite this tried and tested '80s method, once the final track on 'Liquid Love' winds to an end, a strange sensation washes over: you want to play it again. And each time you do, little things about each song jump out at you that you didn't notice last time. Before long the loops and hooks are familiar fixtures in your brain and the album, from Shy Child's point of view, is a success. 'Criss Cross', which was released free as a teaser at the end of last year, is the album's stand-out track. But there are other tracks worthy of the teaser position, including 'The Beatles' and 'Strange Emotion'. 'Liquid Love' is far from a revelation in house-synth-pop, but it has a handful of well-crafted, catchy tunes and it strangely compelling listening.

I AM UN CHIEN !

Lazers Do.

THE TOXIC AVENGER

Todd is God !

JACKSON (dj set) :

Breakbot Valentine Mixtape

Shy and exclusive frenchman Breakbot is coming out of his shell with his romantic disco-tinged electro numbers, long having made girls (and boys) blush to his eclectic and energetic mixes including his much celebrated Dance on Glass Mix for the Asian Dan Blog. Thibaut Berland has brought joy to our ears with his happy-go-lucky remixes for Pnau and Justice, typically enjoyable electro tracks reworked with his signature slap bass and tinkly bits that got a million blogger kids dancing. His own songs, always unashamedly romantic and often filled with the sound of crickets in the intros, feature his funky basslines and crooning vocals which never cease to make you smile. Sounding cheerful and naive, his songs named 'Happy Rabbit', or 'Summer Party' on Moshi Moshi fused classic French House sounds with the new breeds of electro, 80s funk, and feelgood pop. His first single coming from of course, Ed Banger Records, 'Baby I'm Yours' is a vocal pop treat featuring the Parisian-based Irfane from Outlines, seeing remixes from the groove-tastic Siriusmo, to La Funk Mob alongside the B-side 'Make You Mine' dixit Dazed & Confused.

After the success of 2009’s ‘The Power EP’ , and fresh from remixing Temper Trap, NASA feat. MIA & Spankrock, Alex Metric and Don Diablo, Evil Nine start 2010 with a new club single. No Manners has been destroying dancefloors across the world on Evil Nine’s DJ dates, including the recent tour of Australia’s Summerdayze festivals. Blogger’s favourite, the South African rapper Spoek Mathambo has collaborated with the likes of Boys Noize and released on labels including Try Harder and Trunk Funk. “Yet again we've been asked by Marine Parade to describe our latest single in our 'own inimitable style' which is incredibly annoying but if we don't do it the promos can't be sent out so I guess we'll have to. For some reason we've gone totally disco recently, we're not sure why but it's happened none the less. Don't worry though because neither the Bee Gees or any of their flare wearing buddies are anywhere to be seen; it's more the spacey futuristic type of disco we're all over. We've definitely put our own stamp on it though by keeping it tough, rugged and a little rough around the edges which I guess is also our 'own inimitable style'. It features the vocal talents of Johannesburg's Spoek Mathambo who's written his ode to the strippers of the world so God bless him for that. On the remix front we've got Arveene and Misk fresh from remixing The Prodigy, Oizo and Felix Da Housecat and a great remix from Italian newcomer Dannoso of which No Manners is his first but that in no way makes it any less awesome.”

Beginning January 18th, Tiga will release a series of remix 12"s for "Sex O'Clock", "Overtime", "Gentle Giant" and "Love Don't Dance Here Anymore", songs from his 2009 album Ciao! The ambitious project features some of the most respected and sought-after producers in dance music. "For these remixes, I looked to Titans. Standing on the roof of my greenhouse, I called out, 'Hey you, get off of that impossible cloud and into my car. We're gonna drive all night 'til we hit Remix City ! '" "I asked them, 'When can you have the remixes ready by?' They said, 'About a month from now.' I said, 'Time. That's precisely what the song is about. Use that.'" Tiga could not be more excited about these vinyl releases, and wants nothing more than fans to share in his enthusiasm. "If you purchase all four, I will write your name and credit card information in a special leather-bound book. Also one copy will include a silver ticket, which you can trade in for a golden ticket. Which does nothing." "I'm a dreamer. I see the world through groove-colored glasses, ever watching the horizon for the whole world to come dancing into my arms."

MGMT "Congratulations"

French Horn Rebellion return with an EP co-written with Brazillian duo, Database. Beaches & Friends is due for release on 1st March and is likely to become an electro hit. As 2009 draws to a close, for Robert and David Perlick-Molinari (aka French Horn Rebellion), two brothers born and bred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the world is a very different place to the one that started it. Since the recent release of their debut single Up All Night, FHR have been swept along by a flurry of accolades from radio, press and bloggers alike, including a Record of the Week from BBC Radio 1 Nick Grimshaw and the coveted Single of the Week slot in French music bible Les Inrockuptibles, who described the bands sound as the euphoric soundtrack to 2010. Now back in their current residence of Brooklyn, NY, after a whistle stop trip to Europe for a series of madcap shows and radio interviews, FHR are already planning a speedy return with Beaches & Friends, their new EP (with a difference) and recent Hype Machine No.1 slated for a Feb release. And with the brothers currently cooped up in their studio lairs concocting some brand new musical potions for their forthcoming debut album, all bodes rather well for 2010. New single Beaches & Friends co-written with Brazilian duo Database, friends and recent touring mates of FHR, is not quite what you would expect though. Robert explains : The coolest thing about Beaches & Friends is that the original track doesnít actually exist. It was the result of a big collaboration between us and a bunch of our friends. We and Database came up with the vocal hooks and synth lines, and from there all the different versions were created. The French Horn Rebellion NYC version, Database's Club Edit, the Twelves Radio and Remix versions, and finally the Hey Champ Remix. Every track is a variation on a theme, a similar idea to Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. In fact the Beaches & Friends EP is kind of a modern-day Enigma Variations.
