Softwar Blow Slowly

So here's a brand new mix from a recent addition to the Warm Family and one to watch for 2010: Softwar. Softwar are the Sydney-based Myles Du Chateau and Jeremy Lloyd and here they've put together just under an hour of lush disco and slow-burning house for your enjoyment! Coming up they've got a remix of Groove Armada's forthcoming single 'Paper Romance' (which you can still check out on our Soundcloud page here) and a remix on Two Door Cinema Club's upcoming 'Undercover Martyn' EP on Kitsune. On top of all that their original material will soon be debuted in the form of 'Colour Flight', which will be the opening track on Kitsune's forthcoming Gildas & Masaya Tokyo mix CD which is due for release in February. So watch this space !

Two Door Cinema Club continue their fine tradition of cooking up well-inspired guitar melodies and perky vocal hooks with this brand new single. Two Door Cinema Club's second single, Undercover Martyn, will be released on February 22nd through Kitsune, preceding their highly anticipated album, Tourist History, due out March 1st.

03. Undercover Martyn (Jupiter Remix)

Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn (Softwar Remix)

Goldfrapp "Rocket (GRUM Remix)"

Tensnake "Coma Cat"

After producing one of the twelves of 2009 with his Running Back outing, Tensnake turns up on Permanent Vacation with his new "Coma Cat” EP. Title track "Coma Cat” loosely samples Anthony And The Camp's club-soul track “What I Like” (produced by the legendary John 'Jellybean' Benitez, and yours for a £1 on Discogs!), which instantly gives the track a mid 80s feel (I'm sure there are touches of Gwen Guthrie in there as well...), pitched somewhere between disco and house. Whatever it is, it's fantastic! Forums have been buzzing about this cut, so it's nice to finally have it pressed up on wax. "Need Your Lovin (Dub Mix)" sticks with the same mid 80s time frame, coming on all Larry Levan dub-disco-boogie-bass. Another superb cut! Completing the trio of killer tracks, and this time channeling the likes of D-Train and other Prelude gems, we have "Get It Right" - quick, get yourselves booked on the time machine to Paradise Garage !

Scion CD Sampler V.28 : Dub Police

Continuing to deliver exclusive remixes from some of the most notable names in dance music, this most recent release in the Scion A/V Sampler series highlights London-based label Dub Police. Since forming in 2004 Dub Police has risen to become one of the most well respected Dubstep labels in the planet, its artists traveling the globe regularly, bringing the heaviest new sounds from the UK to devoted fans worldwide. Turn up the low end on the system and get ready to step to the massive sounds of the Dub Police crew...

1. Caspa - Ready Eddy
Label bossman Caspa sets off the disc with a proper half-time grinder. A huge wobbling bassline over pared-down drums, sprinkled with robotic vocal fragments.
2. Emalkay - Critical Hit
A seemingly harmless filtered synth at the top quickly gives way to a frantically swung out hat and giant splash of a snare. Massive 3 oscillator bass sound rides the groove all the way through.
3. The Other - Quantum Leap
Serious bass odyssey here ya'll. Once the theme is established at the top, it's play time. The Others run the gamut here, playing with call and response ideas, basstones, and breakdowns.
4. Subscape - Dominant Species
This track puts the emphasis on the double time feel implied frequently in Dubstep. An incredibly aggressive bassline reminiscent of the late 90's drum and bass sound drives relentlessly throughout.
5. Trolley Snatcha - Slow Down
An ominous minor key string loop opens this heavy piece and sets the tone for this lumbering giant. A slow motion dirge whose bass is as heavy as its mood.
6. Matty G - Turf W*rz
80's drum machines get the full dub treatment on this tune as synths and snares echo across the stereo field over subdued basslines. Dark and spacious, this beat shows the more laid back side of the beat movement.
7. Unitz - Light Ina Distance
The most directly Jamaican-influenced track on this sampler, Unitz incorporates many familiar dub conventions including the keyboard skank, pure sine-wave bassline, and everything drenched in reverb. Great use of the 80's keyboard/horn tone nods respectively to many reggae classics.
8. Orien - Strawberry Kiss
Lush atmospheric pads and a subtle double-time skanking keyboard paired with racing stick and hats give this track a paradoxically relaxed and excited feeling. Very textural and visual track with plenty of room to breathe.
9. LD -Oh Yeah
A round, dubby bassline and double-time tambourine and hats are featured prominently in this tune and recall early 90's jungle. Flutes and synths are delayed out with vocal fragments creating a vibe full of energy, but not abrasive.
10. D1 - BRB
Situated a bit more on the modern electro side of things, this up-tempo club rocker repeats and tweaks an ascending synth line over a four-on-the-floor kick to great effect. Still, the persistence of the hi-hat and clap patterns ground this track in the Dubstep world as well.
11. J Kenzo - Constant
A minute-long intro featuring a double-time bell, super low snare, and occasional synth snarl build tension into a minimal beat driven by a sub-bass that wobbles away on 16th notes. Plenty of space in the mix, definitely a bass-bin punisher.
12. Distinction - Bionic Bug
Clever use of synths emulate the sound of insect wings swarming in the distance while more immediate sounds pan across the stereo field to get you instinctively swatting the air for digital mosquitoes. These effects, underpinned by a giant splash of a snare and sub-rumble of a bassline make this tune a winning experiment in the vast reach of the modern synth.
13. L-Wiz - Back Stabba
Decidedly filmic synth pads create a very dramatic tone on this track complete with air raid sirens and a brassy synth melody looping from 2 minutes in. Heavily swung out 16th note hi-hats keep the energy high throughout.
14. Dubwoofa - 7am Ghost
Rounding out this Dub Police collection, Dubwoofa creates a hauntingly minimal vibe with lush synth pads and a drum pattern that is both sparse and incredibly tense. A deft marriage of the texturally ambient and rhythmically aggressive.

Caspa - Ready Eddy

Noisia "Machine Gun"

Noisia's immense 'Machine Gun' finally drops to the thunderous sound of dancefloors losing the plot. The first single from their new album 'Split The Atom' gets the remix treatment from dubstep duo 16bit, Ninja Tune's sampling king Amon Tobin and drum & bass superstar Spor. All killer, no filler ! Dutch masters Noisia show their production expertise with a hard-hitting smash ! Watch out for Noisia in 2010 ! Chase & Status & Noisia come with the precision tuned aural assault, one of the greatest production outfits of our time.

Tracklist :
01. Machine Gun
02. Machine Gun (Spor Remix)
03. Machine Gun (16Bit Remix)
04. Machine Gun (Amon Tobin Remix)
05. Machine Gun (DJ Edit)

Noisia - Machine Gun (DJ Edit)

Groove Armada "Black Light"

With each release Groove Armada morphs a little bit more and Black Light is a testament to that. Quite possibly the only recognizable aspect of the album is the driving electro base we have come to love from modern GA releases. Having said that, the album is a far cry from anything they have given us before. What you can expect is a serious dose of 80’s fueled electro-pop. Black Light gives you eleven new GA tracks that bleed the lines of what is electro, indie, and dance. It will take you a few listens to get into it if you aren’t the biggest electro fan. Each track has plenty synths and vocals that will pull you through and lead you into the next. You’ll hit “I Won’t Kneel” featuring Saint Saviour or “Fall Silent” and you will question just exactly what decade you are in. Yes, it is like that. It is an album that leads you up through the years and by the time you hit the first release, “Paper Romance,” you’ll know you have come full circle. Black Light is a straight one-way electro ticket and you are riding courtesy of the Groove Armada. What you won’t find on the album, which is unfortunate, is a GA only track. Everyone of the eleven songs has the tinge of someone else. Saint Saviour and Nick Littlemore make four good appearances while names like Bryan Ferry, Will Young, Jess Larrabee, and Fenech Soler cover the rest. That is the only downside if there could be one. It is a vocal-filled album with serious messages and, at points, quite emotional. Black Light, while being a very well produced album, is one that you can’t trust. Or shall I say you can’t trust a review. If you are a serious Groove Armada fan you will love it or hate it, I doubt there will be an in between. If you are just a music lover who is really digging the way electro and indie sounds have come into their own in the last few years than this is definitely for you.

Tracklist :
1. Look Me In The Eye Sister
2. Fall Silent
3. Just For Tonight
4. Not Forgotten
5. I Won't Kneel
6. Cards To Your Heart
7. Paper Romance
8. Warsaw

Deadmau5 "At Play Vol. 2"

Following the worldwide success of the ‘at Play’ collection, we felt it only right to once again throw open the chest of hidden gems at Play Records. This compilation includes proven clubland monsters and dirty dancefloor bombs from the Canadian whizz that is Deadmau5, alongside some of his finest collaborations to date. Included in the package are tracks by Juno award winning Billy Newton-Davis with the ‘All U Ever Want’ mix, ‘R My Dreams’, and dancefloor diva Mellefresh with her Billboard Top 10 chart smasher ‘Attention Whore’. Not to be missed is the often-overlooked BSOD track ‘This Is Also The Hook’ and ‘This Noise’ – soon to be released on video on MTV networks worldwide. After bursting onto the scene in 2006, Deadmau5’ (aka Joel Zimmerman) rise to the top has been swift and well deserved, grabbing the Producer of the year accolade and accumulating a wave of Beatport number 1 selling titles. These achievements increased his profile and attracted the attention of many influential figures within the industry. It wasn’t long before his in demand work was being licensed to the biggest compilations and labels in the business. As with 'at Play', the second collection is completely DJ friendly with cue points that are seamlessly segued for your continuous listening pleasure. With all 10 tracks being re-mastered and presented in this exclusive format, it makes Volume 2 unmissable ! Out March 22nd on Play Records.

Thieves Like Us "Never Know Love"

Jahcoozi "Barefoot Wanderer"

All of this had to be featured here, and well, it is now. But ! A band that records an album like “Barefoot Wanderer” could hardly be interested in a text full of self references. It might even be quite useful to simply forget most things known about Jahcoozi. “Barefoot Wanderer” most definitely marks a caesura. As the title already suggests, it’s the implementation of a new-found purism. It’s not a loud, bright, stage-ready record. Recording something like that would’ve been far too easy. Of course they continue to be restless, they still filter their distinct dynamic from their different tastes in music and they are still crossing borders. With the support of the Goethe Institute they went to Kenya to record the track “Msoto Millions” along with MCs from Uko Flani, a Kenyan dancehall/reggae crew in Nairobi. Staying true to their core musical approach, they gathered friends from all around the globe, but this time took it further than ever. For example, there’s a track with percussionist Guillermo Brown from New York, they feature Belgian singer Barbara Panther on another, and (drum roll!) clay pot percussionist Oori Shalev from Israel, who of course played his part in making this track a quite unconventional affair. In general, they bring home sound souvenirs from every one of their journeys, but they wonít tour the world with Hypebeast-approved trainers on their feet - they wander barefoot. Not only does “Barefoot” happen to be the most fitting metaphor for this album, it is also a kind of branding for the mentality that Jahcoozi and their brothers in spirit, Stereotyp & Alhaca from Vienna, have come up with. A mentality that appeals to everyone who feels comfortable in the most varied worlds of bpm counts and bass variations. Itís something like an attempt to find a genre name for the act of refusing genres. Release : 19.04.2010

Tracklisting :
01. Barefoot Dub
02. Zoom In Fantasize
03. Powerdown Blackout feat. M.Sayyid

Boys Noize new album ”Power” has been released in October 2009 and already got massiv support across all genres. “Transmission” is the 2nd Single out of “Power", it´s static unheared synth sound, it s robot voices (You Are Neutron Because Lazor Transmission) on a breakbeat gives you a feeling of Josh Winks early hit “Higher States of Conciousness” going to bed with Kraftwerks sound aesthetic and Robots on a 2010 afterparty. This release includes a “dream package” of remixes and also a video to follow shortly after.Well respected electronica producer Mr. Oizo (Ed Banger) does what he can do best by twisting the original to a serious moment of a firecracker, Tiga takes the main idea of the original song and turns it into the perfect 4/4 banger, BNR´s super talented Djedjotronic delivers 2 remixes : 1 Acid drivin´ shot and a “big room” techno dub for friends of Len Faki or Dubfire. With the Untold remix (Hessle Audio) you get one of dubstep’s most interesting producers bringing an epic version, and last but not least we have a real deep techno remix by the techno master himself, Berghain’s resident DJ James Ruskin (Bluefin Rec).

NYC's producer extraordinaire Pocketknife and Rough Trade's band new soulful pop signing Joe Worricker join forces on 'Get Around To It', taken from the album Electric Minds: A Tribute To Arthur Russell. Some people call Russell a genius, some a tortured artist and for others he was misunderstood; but for many his music is the ultimate tribute to his life that was cut short in 1992. Arthur Russell's work has been covered, sampled and used as inspiration but what really drove Electric Minds to build this project is to simply continue his legacy and through modern interpretations bring examples of his work to a new generation. Whether it's his unique cello playing, tender angelic voice, quirky and carefully crafted words or hypnotic club anthems. Arthur's music is from a bygone age but is still relevant and often heard and talked about in today's discerning circles. Pocketknife and Worricker re-work 'Get Around To It' into a luscious modern disco stomper. Enjoy, and feel free to post.

You can suggest a color, but the choices are currently limited to topaz and fudge). This remix package beat out a host of other proposed concepts.

Martyn Remixes 2/2

For this second set of remixes, Martyn invites Ben Klock, Roska and Illum Sphere for a suitably heavyweight revision session. Fresh from an inclusion on the all-taking Fabric 50 tracklist, Berghain's Ben Klock dries off any melodic excess on 'Is This Insanity' to provide salty dry techno terrain for Spaceape's foreboding vocals before Manchester's Illum sphere revisits 'Brilliant Orange', locking off stiffened 2-step breaks with an unstable sense of timing and gorgeously noirish synth swirls. Finally Martyn and DBridge's exceptional 'These Words' from his debut album is revised by Roska on his 'Speechless' mix. He puts the soul-wrenched vocal to great use over a hard-synced Funky riddim, softened at the edges with hovering synthlines but still containing more than enough bite to work up any room. Heavyweight !

Martyn Remixes 1/2

Following his tremendous Fabric mix last week, Martyn offers some of his best beats to Zomby and Redshape for the first part of a killer remix package. Quite unusually, Zomby's mix spills beyond the five minute mark, giving us extra time to enjoy cruising alongside his Lazer-etched R'n'B synths and swaggering Kwaito/Funky percussion before we hit the rewind button another ten times. If you're of a dancing persuasion, this sh*t's totally vital ! Meanwhile, Redshape does himself proud with the raw kink of his 'Seventy Four' remix, embellishing the warmest Detroit aspects with his arsenal of vintage FXs while keeping a rooted afro-rhythmic swing reminiscent of Theo Parrish with shuffling hi-hats, deeply padded bass thumps and strokes of barely-tamed percussion. Essential tunes, DO NOT sleep on this.

Martyn - Hear Me (Zomby Mix)

On February 22nd Ellie Goulding will release her new single ‘Starry Eyed’ on Polydor. Her debut album Lights will follow on March 1st. ‘Starry Eyed’ is the follow-up to her first single ‘Under The Sheets’ which was released in November on indie label Neon Gold. The low key release attracted a huge amount of attention, and led to an early appearance by the young singer- songwriter on Later with Jools Holland. Ellie was recently announced as the recipient of the Brits Critics Choice Award which she’ll collect onstage at the Brit Awards in February. Ellie’s songs are built around big proper tunes that lift you up and spin you round, yet there’s something off-centre about them, something sparkly, filmic, haunting, odd. She mixes heartfelt emotion with other-wordly atmospherics, spins cool electronica into dreamy warmth. Her insistence on putting her guitar in every song, whether an acoustic cover (she’s done some amazing covers of Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead, Wolves by Bon Iver and Roscoe by Midlake) or a gorgeous song about new love gives her soaring electro-folk an earthed rootedness. As well as supporting Passion Pit in March, Ellie has recently announced her first headline tour of the UK in March and April.

Gorillaz "Plastic Beach"

Fabric : Elevator Music

Fabric are set to venture into fresh territory with a new unmixed compilation series. Entitled Elevator Music, the purpose of each of the releases is to showcase unreleased tracks from some of the producers that have been exciting the Fabric staff, with a definite focus on dance floor. In an interview with FACT, Fabric's A&R synchronisation manager Graham Best has commented that, "for whatever reason I think the last twelve months has seen things go nuts in terms of ideas being exchanged, sounds developing and amazing tracks coming out every other week. It's a really exciting time and as a relatively well known name in dance circles it made sense for Fabric to try and document it."

Although Best has said that future editions won't focus on any particular genre, Volume 1 has a grounding in UK bass music and related international producers, collecting new tracks from the likes of Martyn, Starkey, Shortstuff, Untold and Hot City, as well as an appearance from previous Fabriclive contributors Caspa & Rusko. Ranging from bumping sub-heavy house through to various styles of dubstep, the compilation is sure to appeal to listeners who have been keeping their eyes on recent developments in the UK scene. Although only a CD release is on the cards for the meantime, best has hinted that there will be a set of vinyl singles that will follow on from the compilation's release in January.

Camel "Zig Zag EP"

The first ep by Camel on DeadFish put him on the radar of many djs around the world, after radio plays from the like of Pete Tong and few remixes, He’s back with a 3 tracks ep that I’m sure will gain him even more attention : “Zig Zag” has one of the most original sample I heard recently, “Obrigado” is pure and simple groove and “Neon” it’s the perfect 6am stomper.

Feedback :
Crookers : Neon is for me !
Sinden : Obrigado is a nice rolling track. deadfish doing it again !

Following the success of the singles “Salt Air” and “Solo” (both sold out on Kitsune Records), the London’s dance-pop trio will be released their debut LP “Unicorn” on January 25th. The album had been produced by Dave Kosten (Bat For Lashes) and we’re sure that a lot of people will get their teeth on Chew Lips. A brilliant new band with ambition and talent to burn and an iconic frontwoman in waiting. and, with 'Unicorn', quite possibly the best future classic pop album of next year.

Homme ? DJ ? Robot ?

Miike Snow - Silvia (Hugg and Pepp Remix)

The Lazy Dog Galerie : Laurent Fetis

Kill The Hype Party #3

Thao with the get down stay down, Basia Bulat et Sydney Wayser partagent l’affiche de cette soirée pop folk.

The Get Down Stay Down.

Hot Chip "One Life Stand (Album)"

Warmer, deeper and more stripped back than their previous record Made In the Dark- One Life Stand is still conscientiously crafted and informed by the kind of intelligent evaluation that is now second nature to Hot Chip. The seductive and surprisingly glossy finish they can deliver when the mood takes them is enhanced by an emotional honesty and open-hearted optimism that is disarmingly affecting. With both feet in the Jack Track underground roots of classic house and techno, and a heart in candid song-writerly craft, the album is convincingly inspired by Joe Smooth, Marshall Jefferson, Derrick May, Theo Parrish, Bill Withers and Bill Callahan all at once. One Life Stand seeps through to your soul while defiantly striking a pose in the middle of the dance floor called Now ! “We never have any plan when we record”, says Joe Goddard, one half, along with Alexis Taylor, of a core duo that have had the name Hot Chip since they played Pavement and Spacemen 3 covers at Elliott School, Putney where they first met in their early teens. “Things happen and we try to follow the thread wherever it leads. People might be surprised by a song like “I Feel Better” coming from us. It’s kind of a big, commercial song that came from nowhere. We decided to embrace that instead of discarding it on this album.” But even this accidental towering Euro classic just waiting for a Robyn or a David Guetta to add shimmering synths and perform it on some glittering music awards show from Dubai- isn’t enough to drag the whole thing in one direction. There’s still one of those gorgeous ballads that make you feel like you’re looking though a gap in Alexis’ curtains as he emotes almost privately on the ironically titled “Slush” (a recent collaboration with Robert Wyatt was inspired and makes perfect sense when you hear this). Songs from Joe like “Brothers” ad the beautifully naive “Alley Cats” seem to move closer to Alexis’ instinctively candid style. Gospel-inspired arms-aloft future house classics like “Hand Me Down Your Love” arm-wrestle with the spooky bass-line heavy Detroit influenced disturbance that is “Take It In”- something which might have Jeff Mills wondering why he’d never thought of putting something whistle-able on top of his brooding psychosis.

Go Up To Get Down” is a collection of remixes taken from Kidda’s debut album “Going Up”. “Going Up” was released in 2008 and received warm praise from the press. After the release of the album, Kidda’s DJ bookings took off and subsequently he has DJ’ed at festivals including Glastonbury, Loop & Beautiful Days and club nights such as Stealth, Fuzzbox, Chew The Fat, Razzmatazz, Angel Breaks and Impending Delight. Most of the remixes were personally commissioned by Kidda himself and are reflective of his musical style when DJ-ing. The remix that really took off was the for the track “Under The Sun” which was remixed by Herve. The combination of Herve’s production and Kidda’s hooks turned “Under The Sun“ into one of the biggest dance tracks of 2008. High profile champions of the track included Annie Mac who made it her “Track of The Year”, Fatboy Slim, Kissy Sellout, and Dave Spoon. “Under The Sun” was then licensed to compilations including Ministry of Sound – The Annual 2009, MOS – The Underground 2009 and Godskitchen 2009. Other remixes that have received Radio 1 airplay and strong DJ support are “Feel To Good“(Jack Beats Remix),”Strong Together“(Heavy Feet Remix),”Smile” (Detboi Luvs Me Mix) and most recently "Doo Whot “(Jaymo & Andy George Moda Mix). Crookers feat. Miike Snow "Remedy"

In ‘Donut’, the world now has a third release to treasure. Once you've heard it, you will understand why. Like all the best records, it is both immediately recognisable (as the work of M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade), but quite unlike anything else out there. For instance, its chirruping restless rhythms, its deep lying strata of microscopic pops 'n' clicks is pure M.A.N.D.Y. An irresistible propulsive percussive energy is a hallmark of the duo’s DJ sets. Its Booka Shade’s melodies, however, their manipulation of dramatic tension, that transform this giddy, insistent groove into something with a darker, deeper emotional resonance. "What has always impressed us is classic songs" explains Philipp, "'Body Language' started as a techno track, but the bass melody came up and changed the whole thing. It’d be stupid to limit ourselves to one sound. In the studio, we’re free.” That freedom is a special thing, and long may the four producers be able to enjoy it if this is an example of what’s possible. With a huge remix package from the likes of Gui Boratto, Boy 8 Bit, James Talk, Ben Hoo and Logistics, Living The Dream have ensured that we’ll all be dancing to this very soon ! Also look out for a Booka Shade version of ‘Donut’ on their new forthcoming album, due out in spring.

A hotly anticipated album due out the first quarter of 2010, is the 9th studio album from the big beat electronica duo, Groove Armada. Black Light will see a proper release on March 1, and include a handful of tracks that the boys have already dropped...for free. The third official single from the "wait, it's not even out yet" release, will be Paper Romance, a raging romp with dramatic buildup verses opening into a chorus you'll soon have stuck in your head. The song features tones from the act's newest vocalist, SaintSavior, as well as Ben from Fenech Soler. You can hear the original track here, which will be released on February 22, with remixes by Doorly, Zombie Disco Squad, Urchins and Softwar.

Bearing all the hallmarks of its creators Radiates is totally original pop music for the new decade. Bursting at the seams with bouncing basslines and synths of all shapes and sizes the sharp production focuses the pop sensibilities of these two cohorts into two and a half minutes of pop genius. Missill "Chuppa (Edu K Remix)"
