R.I.P DJ AM

« New York, New York.

Zero 7 "Medicine Man (Noob Remix)"

Zero 7, aka Mercury Music Prize and Grammy-nominated duo Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, are set to release the debut single “Medicine Man” on September 21st through Atlantic Records. Taken from their highly anticipated forthcoming album Yeah Ghost, 'Medicine Man' features the soulful vocals of up and coming singer Londoner Eska Mtungwazi. Having worked on collaborations with Matthew Herbert and Bugz in The Attic one thing that remains consistent on Yeah Ghost is the roll call of up-and-coming talent on vocal duties. The single release includes remixes from the likes of Noob, Baby Monster, Trackademicks and Cooly G. And here for your pleasure, is Noob's fine effort, all tribal beats and big builds.

Word on the street is that this track is everywhere at the moment. The huge crossover baby that is Sharam & Kid Cudi’sShe Came Along”. We’re releasing via Data Records on 5th October with a ridiculous set of remixes. Doorly takes jungle rhythms and seamlessly merges them with Patsy Cline and Cudi’s vocal. Hopefully you’ll all enjoy the surprising 50’s country influence in the track.

Zomby "One Foot Ahead Of The Other"

Zomby finally follows up his Hyperdub doublepack with an album of future-shocking manoeuvres for Ramp, loaded with nine tracks of style surfing riddims and mind burrowing bleepage. In our books, this is one of the most anticipated and in-demand records of the year so far. His precocious productions since 2007 have taken R'n'B infected grime, dubstep and bassline as starting points before crumbling them with nimble digits and reassembling them in his own skunk smudged vision, practically instigating a movement behind him and seriously blazing a path into future rhythm construction. Any keen followers of the style will have noticed tracks from this album cropping up in places like Blackdown's Rinse show or in DJ sets from Kode 9 or Ikonika, most likely soundtracking those head-in-hands "WTF?!?!" type moments their recent sets have delivered. The scheme for 'One Foot Ahead Of The Other' is generally fixed around funkin' 4/4 patterns nudged, pushed and squeezed into constantly morphing shapes with a fizzing energy centre of UK rave spirit at it's core, picking up the baton from thousands of raves gone by and running headlong in the future, shooting lazers from every orifice and dripping psychoactive sweat all over the dancefloor. We'll shut up now and just let the music do the talking, but for what it's worth, this is one of the best records you'll hear this year.

Canyons "Fire Eyes"

Bold housin' gear from the rather on-it DFA imprint, following those tremendous Gavin Russom 12"s with two heavy NYC jackers from Canyons backed with a very smart remix from Jacques Renault. The pervasive influence of Nu-Groove and Todd Terry is written all these tracks, from Delilah's belting vocal on the tuff-ponce rhythm of A-side jacker 'Fire Eyes', to the flipside with 'Dancing On Silk' featuring Ai Hibino's wavey vox over a Levon Vincent meets Arthur Russell groover. Jacques Renault's 'Living In The Jungle Mix' of 'Fire Eyes' completes a solid package with extra keys, percussion and urban jungle sounds slathered all o'er the joint. Great stuff !

Fake Blood "The Dozens"

Mystique can be important in music and last year Fake Blood took this to another level setting blogs alight as folk tried to work out who the mystery man behind club bomb Mars was. The only pics he posted up were of vampire fangs and, yep, Fake Blood. After a slew of ace remixes for the likes of Armand Van Helden, Underworld and Unkle, as well as DJ sets across the globe, Fake Blood continues to impress with his latest release on Cheap ThrillsFix Your Accent’ EP.

Acidkids "Mitch (Felix Cartal Remix)"

Heavy support by : MSTRKRFT, Zombie Nation, Shir Khan, Chloé, Malente, Mateo Murphy, Zero Cash, Dada Life It is a track loaded with energy, silly crazy basslines and all conditions to an anthem. The first Remix comes from Felix Cartal, he is signed on Steve Aoki’s Dimmak Records and also well known as the biggest sunnyboy of Los Angeles. His style contains dirty, heavy beats with melodies for millions, that will climatically strike something within and cause you to dance. Emperor Machine from DC Recordings transports the Original in a psychedelic way into an other dimension. And after his Album-Release, upstarter Fukkk Offf gives us a listen to his other side behind the pumping tracks.

Hadouken! "M.A.D (Detboi Remix)"

Hadouken! return with a brand new EP on September 15 that cements their reputation as Britain’s most dynamic and forward-thinking young band. Recorded in Holland with gilded Dutch electronic dance producers Noisia, the M.A.D EP is proof of further massive progression for the quintet who met in Leeds at university just three years ago. The EP evolves the cutting edge dance-rock sound unveiled on their UK number 12 debut album, 2008’s Music For An Accelerated Culture, by delivering tracks that are harder, louder, more rhythmic and tightly focused than anything they’ve attempted before, or than anything else on offer by their contemporaries. There are also three remixes of M.A.D on the EP by Detboi, Phace and Plastician respectively, as well as two more brand new tracks : "Something Very BAD," which is exclusive to this EP, and a dub of "Ugly", a track that will appear in a different form on the forthcoming, as yet untitled second album. As anyone who witnessed the reception lavished on not just old favourites but also when new material such as M.A.D was recently road-tested in front of packed festival audiences at Exit, Optimus and Underage will testify, the stars are currently aligning for Hadouken!’s much-anticipated return. Buckle up.

Hadouken! - M.A.D (Detboi Remix)

'Who's There?' is finally out after weeks of support from Crookers, Brodinski, Sinden, A-Trak and more. Remixes by Style of Eye, L-Vis 1990, In Flagranti and Doorly serve to make this one of the most exciting packages of the year so far, topped off with ghostly artwork by Fergadelic from Tonite (attached.) Brooklyn duo In Flagranti take the track to the disco dancefloor and back, sashaying through a bevy of samples, cowbells and slap bass. This is big stuff.

Calvin Harris "Ready For Weekend"

When Calvin Harris came straight out of Dumfries in 2007 with the cheekily titled I Created Disco, his indie sensibility, lo-fi origins and air of (hopefully) ironic egotism led to comparisons with the art school-dance of LCD Soundsystem. Success has revealed him to be far more populist. Size matters to Harris. His stated ambition for his second album is to make “stadium dance” music, which places the emphasis on simple tunes, driving beats, cheesy hook lines and lots of special effects, whooshes, bleeps and heady synth rushes. Ready for the Weekend is, accordingly, big, bold and colourful 21st-century electro dance pop, its shameless crowd-pleasing overwhelming its more subtle musical pleasures. His formula is pretty straightforward, albeit executed with considerable panache. Songs start out simple and organic, introducing lyrical and melodic motifs that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Coldplay anthem, before opening up with some big synths into pumping disco and house tracks. The pop genius is in the way these develop and mutate, rather than settling into obvious, dumb grooves. And (unusually for a producer/DJ) Harris handles vocal duties himself, stacking his smooth, plain voice with simple yet jazzy harmonies. Harris appears to have given up on irony (which was, to be fair, never his strongest suit). “I’ve got to stop waiting for you/ And move onto someone new/ But everything around me is blue/ The colour that reminds me of you” is a lyric that would be rejected by a greeting card company but somehow works when sung with blank melancholy over an up-tempo dub disco rhythm and counterpointed by comically squelching hooks. Misguided attempts to widen his palette with a couple of instrumentals suggest Harris should forget about art and stick with the charts.

Agrémenté d’un remix réalisé par le duo turc Gooseflesh (ndlr: la dernière signature Boxon), il y en aura donc pour tous les goûts ! Death Suite

The peers of the new electronic movement have teamed up for the hottest Berlin/London connection on the dancefloor : Erol Alkan & Boys Noize present their first tracks on August 31st 2009, the forthcoming twelve inch and digital release “WAVES / DEATH SUITE” ‘Waves’ is a top of the night Balearic/disco storm : ‘Death Suite’ is a more abstract, cut ‘n’ paste techno/acid rollercoaster. Both tracks were initially envisaged purely as battle weapons for Erol and Boys Noizes’ respective DJ sets, but the response has been such that a full release became inevitable.
