Minitel Rose have been tearing up the French electro pop scene for the last 12 months. With a mindset somewhere between 'Blue Monday' (1983) and 'Flashdance' (1984) and contemporary bands such as Justice and Daft Punk, Minitel Rose's first record is a real dance music treasure for fans of modem pop music. Full of synthetic hooks and catchy vocals ‘The French Machine’ captures an album full of youthful vibrancy and plenty of pure pop pleasures.Just before you even put the record on, the first thing you notice is the cover and all its meanings. Firstly the band's name, which refers to the old school French culture (Minitel) and to the way that people used to use it (Minitel Rose). Then you notice the name of the album, The French Machine, pointing to their emergence from the Parisian scene and association with the college based Valerie crew (valeriecherie.blogspot.com). Clearly moving in mid-eighties' imagery, their compositions take their place in the French cultural melting pot that links Phoenix, Sébastien Tellier and Daft Punk. The opening “Elevator” twists tough electro-house beats over scything synth hooks as Quentin and Raphael fight over the microphone, “Magic Powder” uses a catchy whistle to evoke the memory of early 80s electro hooks whilst the band add their own pop pastiche over the top and new single “Continue” sounds like Daft Punk doing battle with Klaxons. Feeling nostalgic for a time they didn't even know, Minitel Rose's musicians have been influenced by TV show soundtracks like Knight Rider and The A·Team and in a sense ‘The French Machine’ is a love letter for the bygone time that became pop music’s golden era. Minitel Rose are fighting to bring it back to its former glory and ‘The French Machine’ could very well be the key.

Boys Noize has been busy touring the globe and producing bombs for US artists and Gonzales, but now the label boss is back home with a two-track appetizer from his upcoming new album. The single is a double A-sided salute featuring ‘Starter’, a classic Boys Noize banger in ‘Oi’ style, and ‘Jeffer’, an all-time-fresh-summer-disco-hammer to fall in love with. Boys Noize will be playing at festivals like Benicassim, Rock Werchter, Lollapalozza, Frequency, Camp Bestival, Creamfields, Melt!, Arras, Lowlands to name a few and for sure be playing somewhere near you.

Felix Da Housecat will return to the land of the full-length in August with He Was King. Felix, of course, has a long history in dance music, one that saw him gain more mainstream exposure with the release of Kittenz & The Glitz in the early '00s. Since then, he's been busy traveling the world, making mix CDs and recently has even started streaming his sets live on the internet. This album, however, follows in a long tradition of studio work. It's his tenth, and will be yet another bid for crossover appeal. Says Da Housecat, "Whereas Kittenz & The Glitz was straight up electro, He Was King is straight Felix Da Housecat pop with a nice electronic feel." Nettwerk will release Felix Da Housecat's He Was King on August 25, 2009.

Weird release of the week is Brand NEU ! which is a Tribute to Krautlords Neu. What I can't get my head around is that it's got bands like Oasis on there ? Yeah you read that right. In fact there's Ciccone Youth, Primal Scream, Oasis, Foals, Kasabian. Cornelius, Holy Fuck, LCD Soundsystem, School Of Seven Bells, La Dusseldorf, Michael Rother and more. I guess it's hopefully going to bring to the attention of today's yoof that Neu were top smart indeed. So all of the above folks are covering the originals, doing special tracks for this comp or contributing old Neu-ish tracks so you too can understand how great Neu were. Though listening to it you'd wonder what Neu sounded like given the eclectic mix on here. It weirdly works quite well given that I can't do with most of the bands on here. All the bands sound different as well. Even the Oasis track sounds like a half decent Pixies Doolittle offcut. The Foals track sounds like Cornelius and the Cornelius track sounds like Foals. The tracks which truly embody the spirit of Neu are the ones by Holy Fuck, LCD Soundsytem, School Of Seven Bells, Michael Rother and Fujiya & Miyagi. I'm not sure what's going on with the rest of 'em but it's a decent listen regardless.

La musique de The Shoppings s'écoute comme on lit un recueil de nouvelles qui conte les aventures d'une jeunesse « trop branchée ». Au fil des rencontres les personnages mi-fictifs, mi-réels : mi-anges, mi-démons, se rencontrent, se croisent, se séduisent, s'aiment ou se détestent. Ils dépensent beaucoup d'argent pour s'habiller, sortent tous les soirs, ne fréquentent que les lieux en vogue, fantasment sur la vie des stars de la mode, vivent au travers des « pages clubbing » des magazines glossy. The Shoppings n'est ni seulement punk, ni seulement rap, ni vraiment rock, ni complètement électro. Le groupe est à l'image d'un i-pod bourré de musiques d'influences venues des scènes qui constituent la toile de fond sonore de son époque. Au programme : humour, abus, name dropping, marques de luxe et jolies filles.

2009 will be remembered as the year when women took over music. No longer confined to manufactured bubblegum or pseudo-soul starlets, the girls have staked their claim over the whole pop kingdom with a legion of synth-armed singer-songwriters, from Lady Gaga to Ladyhawke. Leading the charge for the UK are two very different acts : Little Boots and La Roux. Having spent months all over the media and topping the BBC’s annual Sound Of poll, Little Boots should be running things by now. But despite the easy-going catchiness of ‘New In Town’, she’s so far failed to break the top ten. La Roux, on the other hand, should be the underdog. You wouldn’t expect the androgynous looks and sharp falsetto of singer Elly Jackson to easily strike such a chord with the record-buying public, yet massive single ‘In For The Kill’ spent weeks in the upper reaches of the charts. Even the music is a surprise win: where Little Boots’ tunes feel like glossy 21st Century hits, La Roux is pure retro synth-pop. Of course, everyone’s going a bit ‘80s at the moment, but La Roux’s debut is the ultimate expression of our newfound love for that once-maligned decade. Much of that comes down to Jackson’s low-profile partner Ben Langmaid. He helped introduce her to the likes of the Human League and Eurythmics, whose unmistakable presence is felt on every track. Yet for all the ripping off of their electronic forebears, the pair have created an unforgettable and edgy pop record. Launching into the album with ‘In For The Kill’ does exactly what the song title promises : kicking off an attack of irresistible tunes and arresting production. Followed in short succession by the equally catchy ‘Tigerlily’ and singles ‘Quicksand’ and ‘Bulletproof’, the band falls into that classic trap of using up their best material rather quickly. However, apart from a couple of later tracks, the album is far from filler and still delivers blow after blow of superb songcraft. Things may get a bit sparse on true heartbreak story ‘Cover My Eyes’, but rarely does anyone enjoying such a high profile in pop open up with such sincerity as Jackson does here – it’s hardly surprising that she reportedly burst into tears after recording the song. For all the fantastic synth work, it’s Jackson’s incredible ability to be both powerful and vulnerable that leaves those other women staring jealously from the side of the dancefloor.
♫ La Roux - Tigerlily
Un groupe se refusant à utiliser la moindre guitare au sein de ses compositions peut-il malgré tout être qualifié de « Rock'n roll » ? Si la question mérite d'être posée, la découverte du premier single de Golden Silvers, Arrows Of Eros, est un argument suffisant pour permettre de répondre à cette interrogation par l'affirmative. Avec son style si particulier, le trio londonien rapidement signé par Young & Lost Club Records n'a peut-être pas fini de faire parler de lui... Surprenante sur le papier, l'absence de la six cordes n'est que très rarement ressentie à l'écoute du titre Arrows Of Eros, l'omniprésence du clavier tout au long de la chanson faisant oublier sans le moindre mal ce parti pris. Aux commandes de la mélodie, une basse remuante, des harmonies vocales impeccablement menées par Gwilym Gold et des sons de rhodes vintage. Déstabilisants au premier abord, voire ridicule par instant, ces mêmes sons font malgré tout le charme du titre et constituent une marque de fabrique aisément reconnaissable pour Golden Silvers : un son presque lo-fi et très inspiré des décennies précédentes. Avec une aptitude à remettre au goût du jour de bonnes vieilles recettes, une ossature atypique et un son qui ne l'est pas moins, Golden Silvers est l'un de ces groupes en lesquels on aimerait voir un espoir pour les mois à venir. Émettre un tel jugement à l'écoute d'une unique chanson serait sans doute une erreur, mais gageons que le trio saura à nouveau nous surprendre dans un futur proche !
♫ Golden Silvers - Arrows Of Eros (The Shoes Remix)
After the release of “Chasm” and “Wrong Galaxy” Shit Robot (Marcus Lambkin) had listeners’ ears burning for more. “Simple Things (Work It Out)” is his much-anticipated new single to be released by his good friends at DFA Records. Born in Ireland, Lambkin was instantly drawn to music, where he augmented his punk rock education of the Buzzcocks and the Dead Kennedys with nights spent wholly entranced with Acid House in the late eighties. Relocating to New York City in ‘92, Lambkin was well on his way to becoming one of the top DJs in New York City when he chanced into meeting future discopunk don James Murphy. Even after Lambkin returned to the continent, his friendship with Murphy continued to develop, evolving into Shit Robot along the way. In the fine DFA lineage of “Losing My Edge” and “Casual Friday” “Simple Things” upholds the tradition of DFA ‘talkies,’ coupling body-pulverizing bangers with brain-tickling diatribes. The new track is no different, as it features the steely-eyed rant of Washington D.C. based iconoclast Ian Svenonius, who has been the voice of such bands as Nation of Ulysses, The Make Up, and Chain and the Gang. Spleening and screeching throughout about robots, singing machines, and the loss of innocence, Svenonius gets matched every step of the way by Lambkin, who shadows that singular voice with an elegant yet gritty array of synthetic genius.
♫ Shit Robot - Simple Things (Work It Out) (Todd Terje Version)
Formé en 1999 à Olympia - Washington, Gossip regroupe Beth Ditto au chant, Brace Paine à la guitare et Hannah Billie à la batterie. Avec une musique hybride faite de soul, gospel, rock, funk, disco, punk, passion et rébellion, le trio a attiré l’attention des medias grâce leur premier album Standing In The Way Of Control en 2006. Le groupe est mené par l’inimitable Beth – une personnalité hors pair, franche, révoltée, sexy avec une énergie hors du commun, figure lesbienne queer et militante internationalement reconnue. Sa voix a été comparée à celles de légendes telles Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin et Tina Turner ; même si elle sonne de manière unique tout comme la musique de Gossip. Enregistré aux studios mythiques Shangri La à Malibu, Music For Men saisit complètement la puissance vocale de Beth Ditto et le son brûlant de Gossip. Le groupe n’a pas connu de relâche depuis la sortie de leur précédent album studio et du Live In Liverpool en CD et DVD. Pendant tout ce temps Beth Ditto a été sur le devant de la scène internationale recevant des éloges de toutes parts, désignée ‘Personnalité la plus cool de l’année’ par le NME ou improvisée icône de la mode et figurant sur les couvertures des plus grands magazines du monde entier. Bonjour Play Paul, pourrais-tu te présenter en quelques phrases pour tous ceux qui ne te connaissent pas ?
Donc Paul, 32 ans, Producteur, DJ, Chanteur, Live Performer avec plus de dix ans de carrière à mon actif. Connus aussi sous les noms de Buffalo Bunch (avec Raw Man), Syndicated People, The Migrants et maintenant Ryskee.
Quel est ton parcours musical ?
Hip-hop français, puis heavy metal, glam rock, thrash puis filter house puis électro puis "E-Pop" maintenant ! Au départ j'étais batteur dans de nombreux groupes de lycée dont Seven Tracks aux côtés de Romain Tranchart de Modjo. Ensuite j'ai fondé Buffalo Bunch avec Raw Man, puis petite incartade hip-hop avec un morceau pour Diam's ("Pogo" et oui !) en 2001 puis direction l'électro sur Gigolo et maintenant Ryskee, mon nouveau projet électro-pop (E-Pop, histoire d'inventer un énième courant musical) qui en fait est du "RnB de Blancs" selon moi. La chanteuse étant dano-malaysienne et moi germano-portugais, il était difficile de présenter le projet comme RnB...
Tu signes depuis plusieurs mois voir même années sur de prestigieux labels comme Gigolo, Kitsune, Defected, Crydamoure, Craft, Set… Que t’apporte le fait de pouvoir signer sur de nombreux labels ? Cela permet-il de s’ouvrir plus facilement à d’autres types de sonorités ?
Je ne suis pas intégriste de tel ou tel style musical, mes influences le prouvent. Quand je finis un morceau, alors en effet, parfois je réfléchis en terme de labels car chaque label a son style, sa touche. Lorsque j'ai signé Syndicated People sur Defected c'était au final une mauvaise idée... Je définissais le morceau comme de la "hooligan-house" alors que Defected était et reste toujours très house voire garage parfois. Les ventes ont été mauvaises alors que les playlists, les gros magazines anglais plébiscitaient vraiment le morceau. A cela s'ajoutait une sortie au pire moment, en 2003-2004, la vraie année pourrie dans le business de la musique. De plus, je voulais m'affranchir du côté un peu "clanique" de Crydamoure. Attention, je ne dis pas "clanique" dans le sens où Guy Man (Daft Punk) et Rico recherchaient ça, loin de là, mais plutôt aux yeux des autres labels qui nous croyaient liés corps et âme au label.
“Leave Me Amor” avec Leslie Ming est ton dernier EP sous ton nouveau projet "Ryskee". Qu’est-ce que ça représente pour toi ?
Ca représente énormément. C'est aussi la première sortie sur mon propre label Apologee ouvert spécialement pour le titre. Je suis à une étape cruciale de ma carrière, la plus importante. Etant un sacré tire-au-flanc, je me suis longuement contenté de partir mixer chaque week end, être très bien payé (pour ce que c'est) et ne rien foutre de la semaine en studio (le team Kitsune peut confirmer... héhé). Maintenant je n'ai aucun souci à reconnaître que je suis dans le creux de la vague en tant que Play Paul et que je l'ai moi-même bien cherché. D'ailleurs mon site www.playpaulmusic.com a explosé la semaine dernière, crash complet. Je le prends comme un signe des dieux, je cherche tellement à faire assassiner Play Paul par Ryskee que ça commence à se produire !
Comment qualifieriez-vous votre projet ?
A la base, il ne s'agit pas d'un projet. Une ex m'a présenté Leslie un soir où je mixais au Régine et je lui ai dit que j'avais un morceau sur lequel il me fallait absolument une voix scandinave (car souvent très particulières). "Leave Me Amor" trainait depuis plus d'un an dans mes tiroirs, on a fait un essai et le résultat m'a fait frissonner comme rarement. Pour des raisons de communication et à cause d'un certain handicap familial, je n'ai pas envie de montrer ma belle gueule partout, loin de là. On a donc décidé de proposer directement un featuring et non Ryskee seul. Leslie sera l'image du projet et par la suite elle deviendra sûrement artiste seule, à part entière, pour les prochains singles.
Que ce soit en solo ou en duo comme avec Leslie Ming, ta façon de travailler est-elle la même ? Des anecdotes ...
Non ça ne peut pas être la même... Pour "Leave Me Amor", tout était écrit et prêt, Leslie n'avait plus qu'à chanter. Je l'ai faite venir en avril pour avancer sur de nouveaux morceaux. Je lui avais envoyé les instrumentaux pour qu'elle puisse écrire et composer les mélodies de chant et ainsi se sentir vraiment impliquée dans l'histoire. Le résultat est vraiment bon, elle écrit et compose très bien, ce dont je n'étais pas sûr au début. Elle est venue du dimanche soir au mardi soir pour bosser non stop. On était vraiment crevé par moments et sur la fin, sur le dernier track que l'on écrivait à deux, je pense qu'elle a ressenti comme moi cette terrible envie de me foutre son poing dans la gueule, héhé...
Quelle vision portes-tu sur la scène électronique ? Tu peux bien sur balancer...
Too many dj's, too many labels, too many producers, too many parties, too many troudbals etc... Y a trop de tout ! Il y a 10 ans, je pointais avec plaisir l'avènement du home studio et la possibilité pour chacun de faire de la musique. Maintenant je pense un peu l'inverse. Comme dans tout corps de métier, encore plus dans l'art, si tu baisses la garde, tu te fais kicker par de jeunes cons qui ont la niaque propre à la jeunesse. Parfois ces jeunes ont une culture musicale générale et électro en particulier, vraiment minables. C'est purement hallucinant dans certains cas et ça démontre bien que l'intention n'est pas vraiment sincère à la base. Elle ne provient pas d'un réel désir de faire telle ou telle musique mais pour beaucoup, d'un désir d'être le mariole aux platines qui joue des disques et qui veut avoir la côte avec les minettes. Combien de filles évoquaient Guetta et Sinclar quand je disais sur Meetic que j'étais DJ (véridique, héhé). Evidemment il ne faut pas généraliser mais les DJ's sont devenus des stars comme les joueurs de foot, c'est un phénomène relativement récent avec tout les mauvais côtés que ça apporte. Le talent se dissout complètement du coup. Trop de parasytes qui font de la musique pas mal, sans âme. Je suis tout à fait conscient de faire très "vieux con" en disant tout cela mais il y a un vrai côté néfaste pour certains jeunes qui se lancent à fond dans une voie vraiment difficile et sur-saturée. D'ailleurs les plateformes digitales (Itunes, Beatport etc...) commencent à refuser de plus en plus la commercialisation de certains projets car au final trop d'offre tue la demande.
Un titre à conseiller en ce moment ?
Un titre non, une chaîne oui. VH1 Classics, je la recommande vivement aux 15-25 ans. c'est la chaîne 80's de MTV, disponible pour 50cts/mois sur les "box" style Free, Orange etc (ça reste moins cher qu'une sonnerie de merde). C'est une véritable mine d'or. J'ai grandi dans les 80's et l'audace, la créativité de cette époque me rendent hyper nostalgique, tout l'inverse d'aujourd'hui ou rien ne se crée et tout se réplique, se copie. On est dans l'ère de l'ersatz incestueux et de la prudence des majors, il suffit de regarder toutes les émissions radio-crochet style Star Ac' et Nouvelle Star. Que de la récup, de la copie, des covers et tout ça vend ce qui massacre à petit feu certains talents vraiment nouveaux.
En dehors des musiques électroniques, qu’aimes-tu écouter ? qu'aimes-tu regarder ?
Ca peut toujours sembler étonnant mais je fais partie des rares musiciens qui écoutent très peu de musique. Deux raisons à cela : la peur des influences et la bonne santé de mes oreilles qui sont mon fond de commerce. Sinon mes amis facebook peuvent attester de mon assiduité devant BFM TV et sinon surtout des films, d'auteur si possible.
Un conseil à prodiguer à toute personne qui aimerait s’investir tout comme toi ?
Y refléchir à trois fois. Je ne me suis pas tant investi que ça à la base, je pense en toute objectivité avoir fait de la musique suffisamment intéressante à mes débuts pour profiter de ma filiation avec Guy Man ce qui a été une vraie rampe de lancement. Mais comme je dis, si les premiers morceaux de Buffalo Bunch avaient été foncièrement mauvais, Raw Man et moi n'en serions pas là donc pas de quoi rougir.
Pour terminer cette interview Paul, désires-tu conclure sur quelque chose ?
J'ai surtout envie de remercier tous les bloggeurs comme toi qui nous soutiennent dans nos nouvelles aventures. L'industrie de la musique est devenue tellement n'importe quoi que l'on se retrouve à remercier ceux qui, dans une certaine mesure, nous privent de nos royalties, si c'est pas fort ça !

Chew Lips launch their new single ‘Salt Air’ with their first headline show on June 23rd. The bass makes me want to poo a little. The hotly tipped London trio are set to play their first headline show at The Lexington on June 23rd with special guests yet to be announced. ‘Salt Air’ is to be released on July 13th on Kitsune, and follows their debut ‘Solo’.

Zombielicious is one of the best dance albums of The Decade. When I first heard it I badly wanted to license it for Turbo Recordings and we almost did. Zombie was even into the idea, but the timing was bad, so we decided to put together a Turbo-riffic remix pack instead. Bad idea compared to getting every incredible moment of that album but luckily the result is amazing. First of all, I love and respect Mr. Zombie, but mixed in with all that admiration is actually a touch of fear. Flo is so dope on every level everything he's done, the videos for Kernkraft and Worth It, the vinyl packaging of his LP, his press shots, stickers it's all awesome and he does it all himself with his friend Wolfram in the über-city of Munich. It's all spot-on. Flo is intense. I've never seen him make a mistake, though I have seen him get shit-faced and play Beyoncé but that just proves he's got huge balls and loves divas. Basically I reeeally didn't want to disappoint him, but the trouble is that trying to get great remixes is like fishing for music, you never know if you're going to get a giant tuna or a little sardine. Luckily, we took the analogy to heart and busted out The Caviar !

Essex based electro DJ and producer Kissy Sell Out releases his debut album on June 15th, and what an interesting album ‘Youth’ turned out to be. The eleven tracks that feature on this album are instrumentals or feature a vocalist. There were several tracks that stood out for me, including the first single to come from the album ‘This Kiss’. The Chorus was very catchy, and I enjoyed the keyboard/synth arrangements. There’s also two quite strong dance tracks : ‘Essex Boy’ which is well written in a slightly quirky way, and Bubs and Bizzle which would be an ideal track to a street dance routine. Although ‘Harriet’ was a bit too long for my tastes, I can also picture this going down well in the dance/clubbing world. Of the other tracks, ‘Through The Leaves’ is worth a mention for it’s indie/punk leanings, the addition of an interesting string intro, and its pulsing drum beats. If you think retro sits on the right side of cool then listen out for ‘Apple Jelly’, which reminds me of classic synth/pop of the Pulp/Blur era. There are some songs I have mixed feelings about, such as title track ‘Youth’. I can’t help thinking Kissy is having a little too much fun with his synth sounds/mixing desk, resulting in a slight lack of structure. On a similar note, I enjoyed the lyrical ideas in ‘Pop Bottle’, though at the same time found the chorus a bit repetitive. Perhaps a little bit of work is needed in some areas, but this was still a quite diverse and interesting album, that definitely showcases the potential of this artist. There were moments that had me singing along or tapping my feet, so Kissy Sell Out did get a reaction from me, and in many ways, connecting with your audience is what music is all about !

Spencer Product is back after his debut mix CD 'Product'. This time he delivers a party anthem 'We Bite' with razor sharp remixes from London's Tronik Youth and NYC darlings Designer Drugs. 'We Bite', named after one of Spencer's classic lower east side sleezefests is an ode to honest to goodness late night debauchery. It's all about downtown basements, PBR, dirty sex, cocaine and vomit, what more do you need. Spencer's original is an overdriven distorted electro rock affair while Designer Drugs clean it up a bit for the late night electro beatdowns. Tronik Youth keep things very 80's new wave disco with heavy reverbs on the drums, cheap synths and vocoders all the way. If you can't get a trip in to New York this year just close your eyes and this record will take you there.
